Rent a room scheme

The Government Rent a Room scheme offers some tax advantages as the income from renting a room is free of tax. (subject to a maximum limit and certain restrictions which include the inability to claim expenses incurred).

If you rent a room in your house you can choose whether or not to opt in to the scheme. Your income, your personal tax rate and the expenses you can claim will all play a part in calculating if opting in to the scheme is a tax efficient.
